The region is slightly
hilly with steep montains in the south running north-west to
south-east. The old-vine Garnacha vineyards are at high altitudes
600-800 meters above sea level and have poor soils made up of
loose limestone, gravel, slates and quartzite.
The climate is continental dry with fairly warm
summer days (up to 35ºC) and cool evenings and nights, allowing
the vines to breath and securing a long slow ripening. With these
climatic conditions the grapes retain a great natural acidity,
resulting in wines with a long life. Natural precipitation is
limited to 400mm per year and irrigation is often not possible,
forcing the farmers to reduce the yield to less than 2 kilos per
vine resulting in wines with an overall higher concentration.

Winemaker David Tofterup visited every part
of the 5,000 hectare vineyard and eventually selected grapes
from several small parcels ranging anywhere from 0,15 to 2,5
hectares that he thought had the best potential in expressing
the varietal character of the Garnacha and the great potential
of the terroir of Cariñena for this Flor del Montgó
Old Vines Garnacha.
