Monastrell Organic
D.O. Yecla
The region of Yelca lies between the Mediterranean
Sea and the central plateau and so has a dry Mediterranean climate
with hot summers and cold winters. With Monastrell being the
indigenous variety of Yecla it is also by far the most widely
cultivated variety, covering more than 80% of the total plantation
in the region. The first vineyards to become certified organic
were a small plot of 22 hectares in October of 2006. By 2007
this quantity increased to 100 hectares. It is a very interesting
moment
with many Yeclan farmers “going organic”. Currently
there are 2328 hectares being converted into “Organic”.
