Old Vines Garnacha
D.O. Cariñena
Cariñena has a long history of winemaking,
dating back to 300 years before Christ. In 1932, Cariñena
was established as a D.O. region, however it was not up until
the late 80’s that Cariñena began to receive international
recognition as a quality wine producing region, when a couple
of private wineries popped up and a few Cooperatives started to
focus on bottling their wines as supposed to selling it bulk.
In the late 1990’s the wine industry has attracted new investors
to the region that have invested millions of Euros in state-of-the-art
Châteaux style wineries.
The Garnacha grape has been the indigenous grape
variety in the historical Aragon region and cultivated in places
like Cariñena for centuries. It is also by far the most
widely cultivated grape variety in the region, representing more
than 60% of the total plantation.
